The New Zealand Tyre Stewardship fee is a small charge added to the sale of new tyres in New Zealand.
It’s part of the Tyrewise regulated product stewardship scheme, which started rolling out in 2024. The fee funds the collection, transport, and environmentally responsible processing of end-of-life tyres so they don’t end up in landfills, stockpiles, or dumped illegally.
How it works:
-
Every new tyre sold in NZ (car, truck, motorcycle, agricultural, etc.) has a stewardship fee included in the price.
-
This fee is paid by the tyre importer or manufacturer and is passed through the supply chain (so customers see it at purchase).
-
The money goes into a central fund run by Tyrewise, which pays accredited collectors and processors to recycle or repurpose tyres.
